I felt a bit hesitant while titling this article. This is a difficult topic, so I ask that you would bear with me as we tackle it together. With that said, lets begin!
We all have friends. We hang out with these people and spend our time with them. Our friends affect our choices and decisions. For example, when you go shopping with a friend, you are probably more likely to try on something you would never try on only because your friend suggested it. However, if your shopping with your mom and she suggests something...well, lets just say you may not even take a second glance at it. My point is, friends have an influence on you. I'm not saying they have authority over you, but I am saying their habits and qualities rub off on you, whether they be good or bad. If you're a Christian, it is extremely important that you have both Christian and non-Christian friends. Christian friends help build you up in your faith and encourage you. You need people to challenge you so that you can grow in your spiritual life. However, it is also important to have non-Christian friends as well. Jesus hung out with "sinners". He knew that its not the healthy who needed a doctor but the sick (Matthew 9:12). We can model Christ's love to them in a real and practical way just by simply being a genuine friend. It is important to remember that if the friendship is hindering your relationship with God, you need to step back and evaluate what your priorities are. With all that said, I want to say from my personal experience that friendships take work. What you put into the friendship is what you get out. Investing in the people you love and care about is crucial. God called us to love others- including our Christian and non-christian friends. In fact, God loved us so much he died for us, so don't take this lightly. |
